Free Docks & Town Walls on the Erie Canal
19 along the canal, Troy → Buffalo
One of the quiet pleasures of cruising the Erie Canal is how often you can tie up for the night without paying a dime. New York’s canal towns line the water with free walls and municipal docks — long concrete or floating faces where a boat can lie overnight, many with water spigots and shore power, most within a short walk of a main street, a diner, and a grocery.
Below are the free docks and town walls we’ve mapped along the canal, Troy to Buffalo, ordered east to west. Each links to its own page with the details that matter: depth, power, pump-out, and how far it is to town. Stays are typically capped (often 48 hours) and are first-come, first-served — there’s no reserving a spot on the wall.
A word to the wise: “free” and “open” are seasonal, and amenities can be switched off outside peak months. Confirm power and water before you count on them, and always check current conditions with the New York State Canal Corporation before you travel.
