Erie Canal Regions
The Erie Canal changes character as it crosses New York — from the dramatic climb out of the Hudson, up the Mohawk Valley, over the summit at Rome and across big Oneida Lake, through the quiet Montezuma marshes, into the busy village waterfronts around Rochester, and down the famous lift-bridge corridor to Buffalo. We’ve grouped the canal’s 25 town and port hubs into six regions to make it easy to explore an area at a time.
Capital Region & Eastern Gateway
Where the canal meets the Hudson — Troy, Waterford and the Flight, and Schenectady.
Mohawk Valley
The river-valley heart — Amsterdam to Utica, past aqueduct country and the great lock at Little Falls.
Rome & Oneida Lake
The summit level and the big-water crossing — Rome, Sylvan Beach, and Brewerton.
Montezuma & the Seneca River
Quiet, rural miles and the Cayuga–Seneca junction — Baldwinsville, Montezuma, Clyde, Lyons.
Greater Rochester
The canal’s prettiest village waterfronts and the first lift bridges — Palmyra, Fairport, Pittsford, Rochester.
Niagara & Orleans / Western End
The lift-bridge corridor and the escarpment — Albion, Medina, Lockport, Tonawanda, Buffalo.
