Erie Canal Navigation Season & Hours
Everything on the Erie Canal runs on the navigation-season calendar. The locks and lift bridges are staffed only during posted dates and hours, so those figures shape every boater’s and paddler’s plan. Here are the current-season essentials, at a glance.
2026 season dates
The New York State Canal system is scheduled to open Friday, May 15, 2026 and remain open for recreational and commercial vessels through Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Opening and closing dates are set each year by the Canal Corporation and can shift with weather and water conditions, so confirm the current-year schedule before you travel.
Daily lock & lift-bridge hours
- Standard hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
- Extended peak hours: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at select locks and lift bridges during the peak stretch, May 16 through September 10 — including locks such as E-8, E-23, E-24, and E-32/E-33, and the Main Street lift bridge in Fairport, among others.
Locks cycle only during these hours, so build your day around them — and never try to beat the last lock. Aim to be through your final lock well before closing, and have an overnight tie-up in mind (see free docks & town walls).
Fees
For the 2026 season there are no tolls, fees, or permits required for recreational vessels — powerboats, sailboats, canoes, and kayaks alike — on the New York State Canal system. Fee policy is set annually; confirm the current-year status before you depart.
Communications
Every lock and lift bridge monitors VHF channel 13 (156.650 MHz). Hail the structure by name to request passage, and monitor 13 continuously while you transit so you hear traffic and operator instructions. Keep channel 16 available for emergencies.
Trails & water trail
Note that the Erie Canalway Trail and most paddle launches are open year-round, weather permitting — it’s only the locks and lift bridges that follow the navigation-season calendar. Paddlers can travel canal segments off-season but must portage around closed locks.
