Montezuma & the Seneca River
4 towns · 6 locks · 11 docks & marinas · 15 launches & ramps · 74 places
West of the lake the canal settles into some of its quietest, most rural miles — the old “long level” country of the Seneca River lowlands. This was the hardest ground the original diggers faced: the malarial Montezuma marshes, where crews labored through mud and fever to link the canal across the swamp.
Today it’s a peaceful reach. Baldwinsville sits where the canal follows the Seneca River; at Montezuma the Cayuga–Seneca Canal branches south toward the Finger Lakes, alongside the great national wildlife refuge. Farther west, Clyde and Lyons & Newark are classic canal villages, each with its own waterfront and story.
It’s prime paddling and cycling country — see kayak & canoe launches and Canalway Trail access — and a good stretch to slow down and explore the canal towns.
